No More Performances for the Cebu Dancing Inmates

I was greeted by this news when I logged in today at my IM and I got curious as to why this happened, I further investigated and from this News Article of Cebu Daily News , it seems just that. I first saw the performance of the Cebu Dancing Inmates when I was actually preparing to leave for Cebu, during those times ,me ang my friends even joked that we would be joining them. Then come July (or was it late June?), their popularity once again soared as they paid tribute to the King of Pop. They have become an Internet Sensation as well as an international attraction, people from different countries would go to Cebu to see their performance up close. Based on the article, the reason why they will not be doing any more performances is because of rumors of corruption within the CPDRC. I guess that’s just how things work when you are famous, you will always be surrounded by controversies. But will this really solve anything? I encourage those who read this to share their views and opinions.

Ok guys, things have been hectic for me these past days but before I go to sleep I will post another itinerary that I had visited during my brief escape in Cebu. This place is well known for the many miracles that had occured over the past 12 years or so. I first heard of Simala during my review last year ago. Every day, many pilgrims travel to Sibonga, Cebu to visit this sacred place. I have been here to this place for 4 times already and its like a habit for me to go there everytime I am in Cebu. The place is relatively tranquil free from the noise brought by the city. If you wish to go to a place to relax and contemplate, Simala should be on the top of the list. The hour and a half travel from Cebu City is very much rewarded. Not only will you obtain inner peace but as well as give yourself some cardio exercise due to the elevation of the place.

The terrain of Lindogon is quite hilly, but from afar you can get a glimpse of the glistening sea. I was in the mood to walk 5 kilometers of downhill road under the midday sun and it my efforts were rewarded by scenic landscapes and sites that are unlikely to be seen if you are travelling by vehicle. Aside from the fever and mild sunburn that I suffered afterwards, it was really a fun adventure and I plan to do it again.

Cebu: Fort San Pedro

Time for a history lesson! As mentioned in my unofficial Cebu Itinerary, I will allocate some time visiting Fort San Pedro. This is not my first time actually to visit the said place. I have been here last summer but the pictures went bye-bye when my laptop’s hard disk crashed due to a massive invasion of ants. The fort has been around since 1565, so its mighty safe to assume that this is the oldest Spanish Fort in the country. The fort has evolved from a wooden encampment to a heavily fortified garrison with thick concrete walls and long range cannons. The fort was established to ward off invaders off the coast of Cebu City. Currently, the place is a living witness of the rich heritage of Cebu City. The fort provides a glimpse of the Spanish Era. Inside the interior is an open space which has been turned into a pleasant garden where one can unwind and feel the cool sea breeze. I was hoping to get a glimpse of the fort during the late afternoon but due to my crazy schedule, I had to go there earlier. If you will be going to Cebu, add this on your must-visit list.

Cebu : A Sign of Faith

Ok guys! I’m back from my short “escape” from Cebu City and as promised, I will post pictures here that somehow portrays my journey. As I have stated in my previous post, I will focus more on people rather than landmarks so to start off, here’s a picture featuring the people of Cebu. If you have visited the Sto.Niño Basilica, I am sure that you have seen them. They endure the stiffling heat of the sun and cold rain just to perform the Sinulog Ritual, which is a form of prayer. I’m particularly touched by these two photos. The ones who perform the sinulog are particulary elderly women, but my attention was really caught by these two ladies. I am not really sure on how old are they but its safe to say that they are past 70 years. I realized their unwavering faith and devotion to the blessed Sto.Niño must be the one fueling them. Guys, if ever you pass by the Basilica, I would strongly encourage that you help our elder brethren by availing their services. A few pesos in exchange for a very solemn prayer is very much of a good deal. So please guys, please help them in that very simple way and it would’nt hurt if you give out some extra, these are good people doing a very noble work.

Aklan: Sampaguita Gardens

This is really a late post. This should have been posted a long time ago before I should have went to review at Cebu. But anyways, things like that do happen and just like the cliche “better late than never”. After spending five days of fun in Boracay Island, it was time for us to go home. But on our way, we took a detour to Sampaguita Gardens in Aklan. For a little background, Sampaguita Garden is the home of the “Precious Moments” Collection. Those cute dolls that have made their way to mugs, greeting cards and very much all merchandise. The Garden looks like a page taken out of a fairy tale book. A place where not only the youn but the young-at-heart will enjoy. Too bad that we do not have enough time to fully absorbe the place’s ambience since we have a boat to catch. But I really recommend you guys to visit this place. If you are planning to go to Boracay, why not before heading straight home, make a detour to Sampaguita Gardens to awaken that small child in you.

Cebu: The Capitol

Since its Sinulog month, I believe it would be nice to make another post that is related to Cebu. Just like in my last post which features the Basilica, I will feature in here another landmark that stands out amongst the modern landscape of Cebu City. This is the Cebu Provincial Government Capitol Building. Located along Escario Street and overlooking Osmeña Boulevard, the Capitol boasts a classical design. There is really something in its design that makes it unique amongst other structures. Maybe its the pearly white paint or the unique curves but whatever it is, it surely is something that Cebuanos can be really proud of. It is more than just a government building, it has become a landmark that is definitely a must-visit if you are going to Cebu. To those who are going to Cebu to watch the Sinulog this coming weekend, do not fail to drop by the Capitol Building and see its magnificent facade for real.

Cebu Sinulog: Sto.Niño Basilica

I got to explore and discover Cebu last year when I reviewed for my licensure Exams. A place where the old and the new mix. One famous trademark of Cebu is its devotion to the Señor Sto.Niño. Its a fact that every January, Cebu celebrates its Sinulog festival. Not only Cebu,but as well as several places all over the Visayas. Cebu is the birthplace of Christianity in the Philippines and during the Sinulog festival, many devotees attend the grand procession. I for one, would love to attend the procession this coming days, however, my travels plans are not yet finalized. That is why I am asking my readers who are based in Cebu to provide me more information on the fetsival’s details. But for now, I would like to share to you the oldest Sto.Niño relic in the Philippines which is housed on the Sto.Niño Basilica Minor which is also near Magellan’s Cross. The Sto.Niño is the very reason of the Sinulog festival thus the Sto.Niño Basilica will play a major role during the festival. The Church was built during the Spanish colonnial period and has been a center of religious activities for centuries. Personally, I have an attachment for this place, It is where I would hear mass during my review days. The church’s interior is well decorated and there is even a small park and fountain where people can meditate peacefully. In front of the Basilica is the Pilgrim Center where Devotion and Sunday Massess are held. A few walks away will bring you to a famous landmark in Cebu, a landmark so famous, that its even used for Cebu City’s Seal. Behold the Magellan’s Cross, the cross Ferdinand Magellan planted which also gave way to the spread of Christianity in the Philippines. Another, spectacle in the Basilica Grounds are the ladies doing the “sinulog dance” which is a form of prayer. If you happen to drop by, I encourage you to approach one of them and avail their services, you are not only praying for yourself and family but you are also helping them. These are just some of the many sights and sounds that you can witness at Basilica del Sto. Niño Cebu. Pit Senyor!

Those who are seeking to test their physical limits can opt to rent a bike and traverse the uphill/downhill path towards Puka Beach.
